I thought that headline would grab your attention! It certainly got mine as I read the Oct 11, 1947 edition of The Sydney Morning Herald (as you do).
It reads, “A prominent physiologist said yesterday that he proposed to keep tight corsets on 40 monkeys for two years in an experiment to determine whether the proposed new fashion for women – tightly corseted waists – would be injurious to their health. The physiologist, Dr. Andrew C. Ivy, vice-president of the Illinois University, said he believed that tight corsets help cause stomach ulcers.”
Now I just can’t help but wonder if:
1. Did the test ever go ahead?
2. If it did go ahead, did it last the entire two years?
3. If it did last the entire two years, what were the results?
4. Just what does a monkey in a corset look like anyway? I want pics!
I suppose I could try an investigate further, but I fear that would ruin the magic of the find…
